Avalanche Activity

The fresh snow and very particularly the wind slabs that are forming above approximately 2200 m represent the main danger.

Over a wide area 30 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall on Wednesday above approximately 1800 m, in particular along the border with France. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from westerly directions, soft wind slabs will form above the tree line. The fresh wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant in particular on steep north, east and south facing slopes. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially above approximately 2300 m. In particular from starting zones at higher altitudes medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large dry avalanches are possible. In their paths avalanches can entrain the wet snow. In the typical avalanche paths these can reach low altitudes. More wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses below approximately 2200 m. Meticulous route selection is recommended.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area there is more snow than usual, in particular above approximately 2200 m. 25 to 50 cm of snow has fallen since Monday above approximately 2500 m. The rain gave rise to rapid and thorough wetting of the snowpack over a wide area below approximately 2400 m. And a rapid settlement of the snowpack below about 2500 m Towards its base, the snowpack is largely stable.

Tendency

The danger of moist and wet avalanches will decrease quickly.
