Considerable avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area.

As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation numerous small and medium-sized wet and gliding avalanches are to be expected.

Avalanche prone locations for dry avalanches are to be found above approximately 2400 m. Avalanches can in some places be released by people, especially on very steep slopes. Experience in the assessment of avalanche danger is important. The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

Snowpack In particular in the high Alpine regions of the Bernese and Valais Alps, large quantities of fresh snow and a sometimes moderate wind have given rise to snow drift accumulations that are prone to triggering and sometimes large. In the other regions as well, fresh snow and snow drift accumulations are prone to triggering in the high Alpine regions in particular. Fresh snow and snow drift accumulations are lying on a moist old snowpack which, in southern Valais, on the southern flank of the Alps and in Grisons on north facing slopes, is weak in some cases. As a consequence of warming and solar radiation, on Tuesday in the Bernese and Valais Alps a large number of natural avalanches are to be expected. In particular on north facing slopes above approximately 2400 m, avalanches can release the entire snowpack in some cases. Large avalanches are possible. Observed weather review Monday, 01.05.2023 It was cloudy. Precipitation fell over a wide area. The snowfall level dropped from 2500 to approximately 2000 m. Fresh snow From midday on Sunday until Monday afternoon above 2600 m:

• Southern Valais, western Ticino: 40 to 50 cm
• Western part of the northern flank of the Alps, northern Valais, main Alpine ridge from the Lukmanier Pass into the Bernina region: 20 to 40 cm
• Elsewhere: 10 to 20 cm

Temperature At midday at 2000 m: between 0 °C in Valais and +3 °C in Grisons Wind Light southerly, moderate at times in the high Alpine regions Weather forecast through Tuesday, 02.05.2023 During the night, precipitation will fall over a wide area. The snowfall level will be approximately 1800 to 2000 m. During the day on the northern flank of the Alps and in Grisons it will be cloudy with some residual precipitation. The west and south will be partly sunny. Fresh snow Above 2500 m, between Monday afternoon and Tuesday midday 15 to 30 cm of snow will fall over a wide area, and 10 to 20 cm of snow will fall in southern Valais and on the southern flank of the Alps. Temperature At midday at 2000 m: between +4 °C in Valais and +1 °C in the east Wind The wind direction will be northerly:

• In the central and eastern parts of the main Alpine ridge sometimes strong
• Otherwise in the high Alpine regions moderate, at lower altitudes light

Outlook through Thursday, 04.05.2023 Clear skies at night will be followed by sunny weather during the day. The zero degree level will rise to reach approximately 3500 m on Wednesday. The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. On each of the following days, as the day progresses numerous wet and gliding avalanches are to be expected.
