You can trigger an avalanche where newer cohesive snow rests over weak snow. You will most likely find this on slopes with wind-drifted snow. Slabs can still be soft with such weak snow beneath. Slopes below ridgelines and cross-loaded gullies are the most dangerous. You can find safer travel on slopes sheltered from the wind and lower-angled slopes.
