You can trigger an avalanche on steep slopes where you find more than about a foot of recent snow sitting over older, weaker snow. Most avalanches will be small. The avalanches could be larger and more dangerous on slopes with lots of wind-drifted snow. You can find safer travel options by sticking to areas where the recent snow fell on bare ground or less than about 12 inches of recent snow fell.
