Highlights

The weekend storm has left the area after depositing up to two feet of snow, and approximately three inches of moisture. Strong west winds during the storm created dense slabs on leeward aspects. Humans who venture into steep, wind-loaded avalanche paths could trigger very large slab avalanches today. Conservative terrain choices are warranted.

    Dense slabs formed by west winds could be human triggered in steep wind loaded avalanche paths. These slabs could be triggered by the weight of a single person. Slab depths of two to four feet at the upper elevations, and up to two feet at the lower elevations, are expected.

Avalanche Discussion

Some light snow will move back into the region from the Pacific Northwest overnight. Accumulations of one to three inches are likely at the higher elevations by daybreak. On Tuesday this snowfall is expected to increase in coverage and intensity with another three to six inches of accumulation possible. Winds will back towards the southwest at speeds of 10 to 20 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the teens overnight and rise into the 20s during the day.The general avalanche hazard is expected to remain CONSIDERABLE in the Greys River/Southwest Trails and the Togwotee Pass/Continental Divide areas. In the Teton area the general avakanche hazard is expected to be CONSIDERABLE at the upper elevations and be MODERATE at the mid and lower elevations. Slab avalanches with depths of two to six feet are likely to be human triggered in the Greys River/Southwest Trails and the Togwotee Pass/Continental Divide areas. In the Teton area slabs with depths of 1 to 3 feet could be human triggered in steep, wind loaded avalanche starting zones.
