Highlights

The snowpack is expected to be mostly stable in the early morning hours. Avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets in very steep couloirs or cliff areas. At the mid and upper elevations strong winds and new snow will begin to create new unstable wind slabs and increase the avalanche hazard in the afternoon. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.

    New unstable wind slabs are expected to begin to form at the mid and upper elevations as the day progresses. These slabs will gain volume during the day and reach depths of six to 18 inches by evening. They are expected to be sensitive to human triggers in steep terrain. Isolated pockets of older wind slab with depths to 18 inches also have some potential to be human triggered in very steep couloirs and cliff areas.

Avalanche Discussion

Snowfall intensity is expected to decrease overnight as the Pacific trough impacting the region moves to the east. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the low teens before rising into the upper teens during the day. Westerly to northwesterly ridgetop winds will decrease to 15 to 25 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be CONSIDERABLE at the upper elevations in the Tetons on Tuesday. Backcountry travelers could easily trigger newly developed soft slabs up to two feet in depth. In the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas, similar slides are possible to depths of six to twelve inches, and the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE. Some potential may remain for skiers and riders to trigger deep hard slab avalanches in isolated areas. Large triggers, such as snowmobiles or multiple people on the same slope, are more likely to trigger these dangerous slabs which could have depths in excess of six feet.
