Highlights

The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE above 8,000 feet and MODERATE below that elevation. The snow structure is poor and remains unchanged. At the mid and upper elevations dense, surface slabs lie upon a base of weak, large grained faceted snow. Large slab avalanches cloud be human triggered in steep avalanche prone terrain that was wind loaded during the last storm cycle and has not yet slid. Conservative terrain choices are warranted in suspect terrain.

    Backcountry users could trigger dense surface slabs two to four feet deep. These slabs are most likely to be triggered by snow machines on northeast through southeast aspects but could also be triggered on other aspects and by the weight of a single person. In these conditions previous tracks on a slope should not be considered to be an indication of stability.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A Canadian cold front will move south across Montana overnight. On Sunday this front will move into Northetn Wyoming, spread south and spill over the Continental Divide. Some light snowfall is possible at the higher elevations along and near the divide. Winds will veer to the north and bring cooler temperatures to the region. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in the Teton area and CONSIDERABLE in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas on Sunday. At the mid and upper elevations large slab avalanches two to four feet in depth could be human triggered in steep wind loaded avalanche paths that did not slide during the most recent storm cycle. Previous tracks on a suspect slope should not be considered to be a sign of stability.
