At the upper elevations strong ridgetop winds and new snow will form new pockets of wind slab up to one foot deep. These slabs could be triggered by skiers or riders who venture into steep wind loaded avalanche starting zones. At the mid elevations isolated pockets of new soft slab will begin to form in some wind loaded starting zones. At the lower elevations rain could cause steep snow covered slopes to become unstable. Wet loose slides to the ground are possible on steep banks and road cuts. The greatest hazard will be on or beneath very steep lower elevation slopes that get significant rainfall on top of a deeper weak faceted snowpack.

The mild wet weather is expected to continue through Friday as another storm system moves into the area tonight. Temperatures will only be a degree or two cooler than yesterdays system. By Friday evening 4 to 7 inches of new snow may accumulate at the higher elevations. Strong winds will continue the formation of dense surface slabs in mid and upper elevation avalanche starting zones. At the lower elevations instability associated with above freezing temperatures will persist. AVALANCHE HAZARD FOR THE TETON, TOGWOTEE PASS/CONTINENTAL DIVIDE AND GREYS RIVER/SOUTHWEST TRAILS AREASThe general avalanche hazard will continue to increase but is expected to remain MODERATE. At the upper elevations dense new slabs will continue to grow in depth and extent and are expected to be sensitive to human triggers. At the lower elevations (below 8,000 feet) wet slides will be possible on steep snow covered slopes. A prolonged period of intense snowfall/rainfall tonight or during the day on Friday could increase the hazard to CONSIDERABLE. Be aware of changing conditions and consult the morning forecast for the latest conditions. Please be advised the the Wyoming Department of Transportation plans to close Teton Pass at 3AM Friday morning for avalanche hazard reduction efforts. Backcountry users are advised to consult area specific forecasts issued every morning as new information may become available and unexpected weather can change conditions.
