Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche on steep slopes where winds have drifted snow into meringue-like smooth pillows. Be careful where you find more than about 8 inches of firm snow that cracks or collapses when you weight it. This will most likely be found close to ridges. The avalanche you trigger may step down to weaker layers buried around crusts. You can find safer travel on slopes without wind-affected snow and on lower-angle slopes.
