You could trigger an avalanche by finding small pockets of hollow, firm-wind-drifted snow. If these rest on weak layers, they could be easily triggered. Alpine slopes that crack should be avoided. It is hard to affect deeply buried weak layers and trigger an avalanche. You can further reduce your risk by avoiding shallow slopes with many exposed rocks. Wind-sheltered slopes offer safer travel.
