You can easily trigger an avalanche on most steep slopes where a foot or more of snow fell on weak, cohesionless snow. Most of these avalanches will be small, but on wind-drifted terrain near and above treeline, they can grow large enough to bury you. Wind-sheltered slopes below treeline with less than about a foot of new snow offer safer travel options.
