Snowpack

After a week with repeated strong winds from the northeast and lastly from the southeast, the snowpack is strongly affected by the wind in many places. The fresh and often somewhat older snowdrift accumulations are lying on an old snowpack, which varies in nature from region to region:

• South of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine, at high altitude there are distinct weak layers in the snowpack in which avalanches can still be triggered in places, sometimes reaching down to the ground. In central and southern Ticino, as well as in Val Bregaglia and Val Poschiavo, there is so little old snow that avalanches can usually only be triggered in these layers above approximately 2600 m.
• North of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine and in the extreme west of Lower Valais, the snowpack structure is more favourable. Hardly any avalanches starting in weak layers in the near-ground old snowpack are to be expected.

During the night into Friday, there were partly moderate to strong southeasterly winds on the Northern Alpine Ridge, while elsewhere there were weak to moderate easterly winds.

Outlook

On Sunday and Monday, it will be sunny with patches of cloud in the mountains in the north. In the south, it will be mostly cloudy and from Sunday morning to Monday morning, 5 to 10 cm of snow will fall, with up to 15 cm of snow on the Main Alpine Ridge in Upper Valais. The snowfall level will be between 800 and 1000 m. On Monday, it will brighten up in the south as the day progresses. On Sunday, the wind will be mostly moderate from a south to southeasterly direction. In the north it will sometimes be strong during the night into Sunday. On Monday, the southerly wind will generally die down.

On the Main Alpine Ridge in Upper Valais and in northwest Ticino, the avalanche danger may increase slightly on Monday in some regions. Elsewhere, the avalanche danger will continue to decrease, but only slowly in areas with persistent weak layers.
