Avalanche Activity

In places, weak layers in the old snowpack can be prone to triggering. Small wet snow avalanches possible at all altitudes.

Avalanche danger above 2200 m is moderate, below that altitude danger is low. Main problem: old snowpack. In some places, slab avalanches can be triggered by minimum additional loading. Avalanche prone locations are mainly found above 2200 m in steep east-facing terrain as well as in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. Avalanches generally remain small-sized. In addition, small wet loose snow avalanches can release naturally in very steep terrain. Isolated glide snow avalanches that are mostly small are possible on steep smooth grass-covered slopes.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of warm temperatures, the different layers within the snowdrifts start bonding. In particular above 2200 m, trigger-sensitive layers persist in some places, and there are faceted crystals close to crusts. Up to high altitude the snowpack is thoroughly moist, widespread it is wet at ground level. During Tuesday night a thin melt-freeze crust can form that will soften again during the day. Snow depths vary; all in all there is little snow.

Tendency

Hardly any changes by Thursday. After Thursday, avalanche danger will rise due to forecast snowfall and wind.
