There were sunny spells in the east and south, but elsewhere conditions were very cloudy.

Snowpack

In the west and south, the small amount of fresh snow that has fallen is being transported by the southwesterly wind. Thin snowdrift accumulations are forming locally. Particularly on north-facing slopes, these are deposited on a loosely structured surface and are sometimes prone to triggering.

In southern Valais, Ticino and Grisons, the snowpack is weak with many soft layers of faceted crystals. The snowpack structure is most unfavourable in the Engadine and the neighbouring southern valleys of Grisons.

Last weekend's warmth has also moistened the snow on northern slopes up to around 2200 m. Particularly on eastern, southern and western slopes, there has been an increase in gliding avalanches in recent days, some large in the west. As temperatures fall, gliding snow activity will gradually decrease again.

Weather forecast to Tuesday

Conditions will be very cloudy. Precipitation will fall in the west and south from the morning onwards, as snow above approx. 1400 m.

Fresh snow

From Tuesday morning to Tuesday afternoon the following quantities will fall above 1800 m:

• western part of the northern flank of the Alps, Valais and south: 5 to 10 cm, locally up to 15 cm
• elsewhere a few centimetres or dry

At midday at 2000 m, between -2 °C in the west and south and 0 °C in the east

Wind

From the south-west:

• moderate overnight
• moderate to strong during the day
• on the Main Alpine Ridge strong southerly winds during the day

OutlookWednesday

Conditions will initially be very cloudy with precipitation. In the north, 10 to 15 cm of fresh snow is expected, less elsewhere. The snowfall level will drop from 1400 to 800 m. As the day progresses, there will be bright spells in Valais and Ticino. The northern flank of the Alps will see temporarily strong to storm-force westerly winds overnight, while the south will see moderate to strong northerly winds during the day.

The danger of dry avalanches will increase slightly across the board, with the possibility of danger level 3, considerable, being reached in the far west. The danger of gliding avalanches will decrease further.

Thursday

Conditions will be changeable in the north and there will be a little light snowfall in some regions above 900 m. There will be sunny intervals in the inneralpine regions, and the south will be sunny.

Avalanche danger will decrease.
