Snowpack

In the north and west, the new fallen snow from last Friday has largely stabilised. The wind slabs that have accumulated over the last few days are particularly prone to triggering. In southern Valais, Grisons and Ticino, the wind slabs of the last few days are partly prone to triggering, and there are also weak layers in the lower part of the snowpack. In these regions, avalanches may be triggered in drifted snow and sweep away deeper layers of the snowpack. Occasionally, avalanches can also be triggered directly in deep layers, especially in the Engadine and south of it.

Gliding avalanches, some large, are still possible.

Outlook

On Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny in the mountains with high cloud banks. On Thursday, it will be cloudy in the early morning in the north and west and a few centimetres of snow may fall. The snowfall level will be 1800 m. As the day progresses, it will become increasingly sunny. It will be mostly sunny in Valais, Ticino and southern Grisons. There will be a light to moderate wind from west to north on both days.

The avalanche danger will decrease, but only slowly in southern Valais, Ticino and Grisons due to the weak snowpack structure. Gliding avalanches are still possible.
