Predominantly good avalanche situation, only in few places fresh danger spots

The avalanche danger is low. Danger spots are only in some places in shady steep areas in high altitudes. There the triggering of slab avalanches within the old snow can´t be ruled out with high additional load. In few places with thin fresh snowdrift deposits slab avalanches are also possible. In sunny rocky terrain wet loose-snow avalanches due to radiation can´t be ruled out. In steep slopes risk of falling on the hoar-like surfaces.

Snowpack Structure

The snow cover mostly settled and stable. In most places surface hoar has formed due to wind influence and nightly radiation. In places thin snowdrift deposits have formed which are poorly bonded with the old snow cover. Weak layers are only found in shady slopes in the highest altitudes within the old snow cover (Graupel, soft crystals). The old snow cover is moist even in high altitudes, especially on sunny slopes. In medium altitudes the snow cover has decreased especially on sunny areas.

Weather Forecast

Styria is located on the edge between a high- and a low-pressure system. The second half of Wednesday night is cloudy north of the rivers Amur and Mürz. During the day summits are foggy on the north side of the Alps. The visibility is limited. Rain and snow is called. The snowline is 1.500 m. In the south the weather conditions are better. In the afternoon it will be sunny. Increasing winds, brisk to strong velocities in the mountains with possible gusts.Temperatures get milder with temperatures at 2.000 m are between -3 and 0 degrees, at 1.500 m between +1 and +3 degrees.

Tendency

On Friday sunny weather and milder temperatures are expected. Partially stormy northwesterly winds. Increasing persistent weak layers due to warming and radiation.
