Highlights

Look for signs of blowing snow accumulation on isolated leeward catchment zones. With temperatures cooling off again and most snow on windward ridges down to barren rock, chances remain for new snow accumulations overnight. Continue to plan accordingly and make sound decisions while traveling in the backcountry.

    Triggerable wind slabs may be few and far between today.  Their existence is isolated and possible, in specific aspects and elevation. Most transportable snow has been transported and turned into “wind board”.  Be heads up for small isolated pockets of triggerable harder slab, while dropping into steeper leeward terrain, protected from the wind especially in consequential terrain features.  Wind directions have swirled and changed directions and speed, multiple times in the past 48 hours, finding these pockets is unlikely but not out of the question.

Avalanche Discussion

A few topics of discussion on my mind:

  • Weather Fx this week is mainly sunny and warm with freezing at night. Moving our snowpack into a melt/freeze "corn" cycle especially on solar aspects, with higher winds prodicted most of the week in upper elevations, near tree line and above.  Good corn skiing may be a possible in certain aspects and elevations.  While north shaded aspects might be holding cold snow. Other zones are going to be quite firm and slide for life conditions may exist. Overall "variable" conditions will be present.  Be cautious and continue to make good plans before venturing into the backcountry.  Also now would be a good time to add your spike kit to your backpack for high country missions, if haven't already.
  • A few inches of new snow possible overnight will be pushed around and could make nice pockets of skiable powder, amidst not as edgeable windboard.  Look for surface clues to find the better snow, while remaining cautious of wind slab production.
