Cornice fall will become possible as temperatures warm. Falling cornices act as very large triggers and can impact deep weak layers, causing large avalanches. Minimize time spent on steep slopes under looming conices. If travelling along ridges, remember that cornices break much further back than you expect. This recent example from Togwotee illustrates the nature of this hazard and the potential of a falling cornice to trigger old wind slabs or impact deeper weak layers.
