Stability tests last weekend showed that Persistent Weak Layers (PWLs) were still present and active. Results from a northwest aspect at NTL showed propagation (ECTP17, ECTP26) on a layer of facets below the ice crust. Although it's been two weeks since the last snowfall, backcountry travellers should remain aware of these potential instabilities. Cold temperatures today will decrease the chances of triggering this type of avalanche. An ECT on a west-facing slope two days ago failed to propagate (ECTX), but the facet layer above the Holiday Ice Lens (HIL) remained present and produced a fracture plane on a compression test (CT 16 @ 35 cms from top, BRK Q3).
