Generally stable avalanche conditions exist. Dynamic spring weather could lead to changing conditions throughout the day.  Be on the lookout for Isolated instabilities as you travel and consider building options into your field plan to adapt to changing conditions. 

On a regional scale, avalanche activity will be unlikely today. However, we expect very dynamic weather over the next 24 hrs. Today will start with mostly clear skies and warming temperatures. By this afternoon, you can expect increasing winds, convective spring showers, and scattered thunderstorms. A significant winter-like storm is expected to impact the forecast area over the weekend, with mountain snow showers beginning overnight tonight. Confidence in the timing and intensity of today's snowfall remains low; however, we could see 1 to 5 inches overnight along the Sierra crest.

With such dynamic weather, it will be important to monitor for changing conditions. While avalanche activity is unlikely, it won't be completely impossible. We expect increasing cloud cover and strong winds to limit the impacts of solar warming today.  However, isolated Wet Loose instabilities could become possible on steep slopes with transitioning surface snow. This will be particularly true if the sun comes out in full force and winds underperform the forecast.

It's also Important to keep in mind that new snow and strong winds will create fresh wind slabs on leeward slopes near above treeline. It is unlikely that wind slabs will become a problem during the day. Rather, this is expected to develop overnight as snow showers intensify.  Monitor changing conditions and don't be surprised to find fresh deposits if snow showers begin earlier than expected.

Spring is an exciting and dynamic time in the Sierra, and we could get the full spectrum of conditions over the coming days. If you decide to venture out today, make a plan that allows you to adapt to changing conditions.
