Highlights

Conditions are tricky. You could trigger avalanches large enough to bury people and trucks, but it's difficult to sort out which slopes are safe versus unsafe. You can avoid slopes with stiff, wind-drifted snow to reduce the chances of triggering small to medium sized slides. However, triggering very large avalanches is possible in both windy and more sheltered terrain.

    What and where is it? Triggering a wide, 1-3 foot thick slab avalanche is possible in sheltered and wind-loaded terrain. Several days of heavy, dense snowfall, rain, and warm temperatures formed thick, meaty slabs on most middle and upper elevation slopes. Multiple crusts are buried in the upper 3 feet of the snowpack, providing possible failure layers for the slabs above. 

    How can you recognize it? Assume the slab + weak layer setup exists on all slopes. You may or may not experience obvious signs of instability—snowpack collapsing or cracks shooting out from your skis or sled—before triggering an avalanche. 

    How can you manage it? While a surprising lack of widespread snowpack collapsing or cracking yesterday indicates that the snowpack is adjusting to the huge load from the recent storms, triggering powerful avalanches is still on the table. As you change elevation and aspect or travel in different drainages, you'll see a lot of variability in the buried crusts:

    • How many crusts?
    • How thick are they?
    • How hard are they?
    • Did small facets form above or below them?

    Unfortunately, accurately predicting which slopes are trouble and which are safe to ski or ride is challenging. You may be able to trigger avalanches remotely—from flat terrain below, above, and to the sides of steep slopes. 

    Additional Discussion: Weak, sugary, faceted snow in the bottom part of the snowpack is now buried 3-5 feet deep on W-NW-N-NE-E-SE facing slopes at middle and upper elevations. Triggering a huge slide on these layers isn't as likely, but the resulting avalanche would be unsurvivable. You're most likely to poke this beast 1) where the snowpack is less than 4 feet deep and  2) in windy and/or rocky areas where the snowpack depth is variable.

    What and where is it?  You may find fresh, 1-2 foot thick wind drifts and slabs in exposed upper elevation terrain. We expect slabs will be thicker and more widespread in the Pioneer and Boulder Mountains where more snow fell yesterday. 

    How can you recognize it?  Watch for dunes or smooth pillows below ridgelines and cornices and on the sides of cross-loaded gullies. Cracks shooting out from your skis or sled are an obvious sign that you've found a wind slab. 

    How can you manage it?  Fortunately, the fresh wind slabs should be easy to spot and avoid. If you feel the surface snow getting stiffer, move to gentler terrain. Any wind slab you trigger has the potential to trigger the much larger Persistent Slabs as the wind slab avalanche moves downslope.

Avalanche Discussion

This afternoon, we could see the sun poke through thin clouds, making it feel like you're in a steamy sauna. If this "greenhousing" effect occurs, it will increase the odds of natural and human-triggered storm slabs and wet loose avalanches on slopes approaching 40* in steepness.  

A note on travel techniques with so much uncertainty regarding our Persistent Slab problem: When it's challenging to determine how easy or hard it is to trigger an avalanche on a given slope, you can tip the odds in your favor by considering the consequences of being caught in an avalanche. If a slide would carry you through trees or rocks or into terrain traps where deep burials are likely, think twice before committing to skiing or riding the slope.
