Highlights

A cold front will arrive today, bringing an influx of northerly arctic air into the Mount Shasta region. Climbers and skiers should be prepared for wind chill values of -20 F or lower. Firm and icy surface conditions can be found on all aspects and elevations. Avalanches remain unlikely, and normal caution is recommended for travel in the backcountry.

Avalanche Discussion

Normal caution is advised for today. Northerly winds have potential for blowing snow, however the widespread firm surface conditions leave not much snow to transport. Keep your avalanche mindset sharp, continue to look for isolated cracking, whumpfing, or hollowing sounding snow under your feet. Today, the primary concern is the very cold temperatures near and above treeline. If you choose to go into the backcountry, periodically check on your partner(s) for signs of cold injuries or frostbite. Ski crampons or boot crampons will be key to bring above treeline. 

  • The Everitt Memorial Highway is OPEN. Castle Lake road is still CLOSED, but next for clearing
