Highlights

Avalanche conditions are downright dangerous. Assume that any steep, shaded slope you encounter is likely to produce a large and unsurvivable avalanche.

Slides may propagate thousands of feet and be triggered from a distance, even from flat terrain on the valley floor. A conservative tour plan in terrain you know well — one that keeps you off of and out from under steep slopes — is the way to enjoy the excellent new snow and come home safely at the end of the day.

    Over the past week, four riders have been caught and carried — some partially or fully buried. The weak layer that produced those avalanches is just as sensitive today. Let that reality guide your decisions.

    If you poke this bear, you are likely to trigger a 2–3 foot deep avalanche on northwest through southeast aspects. Many slides are being triggered remotely, and even low-angle or atypical start zones are releasing. Take note of collapsing and cracking, but you don’t need additional red flags to confirm how dangerous this snowpack is — assume steep terrain will slide, and keep in mind that even a small slope could release and bury you deeply in a terrain trap (gully, road, etc).

    The only way to manage this problem is to avoid it. Low-angle slopes with no overhead hazard will have excellent riding conditions. You could also consider south and west aspects where we haven’t seen persistent slab activity — keeping in mind that recent snow and wind add some uncertainty to those slopes.

    Dry Loose:

    Steep slopes will sluff the new low-density snow today. If you are traveling on solar aspects to avoid the persistent slab problem, you’ll need to manage this. They won’t be large, but could knock you off your feet in a place you don’t want to fall.

    There are a couple flavors of wind-drifted snow to keep on your radar today.

    Flavor 1: Older Wind SlabsNorth and east winds after Tuesday’s storm loaded south- and west-facing slopes that don’t typically see drifting. These slabs should be trending toward stubborn, but there’s some uncertainty as they may have capped a newer layer of surface hoar. If so, they could still be reactive today.

    Look for dune-shaped drifts, pillowy snow, and textured surfaces. Pay attention to what’s under your feet or machine: dense or firm snow over softer snow means you’ve found a slab, and shooting cracks confirm it’s reactive. Expect these slabs just downwind of ridgelines and saddles. If you’re headed into solar terrain, seek out soft snow that hasn’t been wind-affected.

    Flavor 2: Fresh Wind LoadingMore typical westerly winds today will begin stripping previously loaded slopes and depositing snow onto north and east aspects. The upside? These fresh drifts overlap with the persistent slab problem — by already avoiding steep terrain there, you’ll steer clear of this issue too.

Avalanche Discussion

This snowpack is terrifying. Today’s new snow doesn’t change the picture much, but even small loads have produced natural avalanches over the past week.

We used to have a thin and soft slab; not anymore. Recent snow has built a thicker, harder slab over a weak layer that remains on a hair trigger — one capable of propagating avalanches thousands of feet wide. We are squarely in the bullseye.

A few hours in the field yesterday gave us more of the same: repeated collapses under our feet and a very large avalanche running wall to wall, which triggered another impressive slide on an unimpressive feature further down the path. These come on the heels of widespread avalanche activity reported throughout the advisory area, including another avalanche that was triggered from the flat thousands of feet below the start zone on Wednesday.

The margins are razor-thin. Any slope near 30 degrees is suspect, and even small features you wouldn’t normally consider a start zone are catching and carrying backcountry travelers. This surface hoar on crust offers little friction — slides can release on low-angle terrain and pull back to flat ridgelines.

This layer will heal someday. Someday is not today, tomorrow, or this weekend. It’s time to shift our mindset. There is excellent snow to be found — stick to low-angle terrain with no overhead hazard and come home safe.
