Mount Shasta

A small storm yesterday deposited 2-3 inches of snow to higher elevations. The only hazard associated with this new snow will be in very steep terrain where the consequences of a small slide involves sending someone on a long fall. Clouds, wind, and cooler temperatures should keep wet loose concerns at bay but keep an eye out for this issue if it's warmer, calmer, and sunnier than forecasted. Observe how the wind is moving snow high on the mountain and if small wind slabs are forming.

Some loose snow avalanches shed off of upper elevation south facing terrain near cliffs yesterday afternoon, most likely as the storm cleared and the sun came out. These were small in size, but large enough to knock someone off-balance and cause a fall. This problem has most likely run its course and freezing temperatures overnight have likely "locked up" the new snow. Clouds and wind should also keep it cooler in the alpine today. That being said, it's late March in California and wet loose avalanches should be something to consider, especially in steep terrain where the consequences of a fall are severe. It doesn't take very much heavy, moving wet snow to knock someone off balance or cause an injury. 

N/NW wind overnight most likely moved some snow around, so look for isolated wind slabs up high on the mountain as well. Again, if they exist at all they won't be very big, but any slabs that could have built are likely sitting on a slick and firm old snow surface and could be enough to send someone for a ride in extreme terrain. Overall the avalanche danger is low for the area, but some uncertainty exists about conditions high on Mt Shasta, so if traveling high on Mt Shasta today these are the things to consider related to snow stability.
