Highlights

At the higher elevations yesterday's snow and strong winds and today's sunshine and rising temperatures will combine to create areas of unstable snow. Skiers and riders could trigger slab avalanches that are large enough to injure or bury a person. Loose snow avalanches may release naturally on steep sunlit aspects. Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully and make conservative terrain choices. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 8,000 feet.

    At the higher elevations southwest to west winds have formed wind slabs on steep slopes. These slabs could be triggered by the weight of a person and are likely to be one to two feet deep. Sunshine and rising temperatures will increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers and could cause natural releases.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Convective snow showers will bring periods of moderate snowfall to the mountains overnight. Additional accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are possible, especially in the higher elevations of the Teton Range. Skies will be partly sunny on Monday with decreasing snow showers. Temperatures at 10,000 feet will be in the teens in the morning and rise into the upper 20s during the day. Valley temperatures will be in the mid-20s in the morning and rise into the 40s during the day. Westerly winds will decrease to 15 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW below an elevation of 8,000 feet. At the upper elevations the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas and CONSIDERABLE in the Teton Range. At the upper elevations soft slab avalanches formed by west to west-southwest winds could be triggered by skiers and riders on steep avalanche prone slopes. These slabs could be one to two feet deep in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas and up to three feet deep in the Teton Range. Sunshine and rising temperatures during the day will increase the avalanche hazard.
