Highlights

It may be possible to find wind slabs in high-elevation catchment zones and in extreme terrain. Be on the lookout for drifted snow along ridge lines and on the sidewalls of gully features. Use safe travel techniques and be on the lookout for features of concern.

    Field observations over the last two days have reported variable wind directions and notable transport above treeline and along high-elevation ridgetops.  Wind velocities are expected to drop significantly today, limiting the potential for continued slab development.  Isolated wind slabs may be possible to find near and above treeline, particularly in high-elevation catchment zones and in extreme terrain. Remember that even a small avalanche can have significant consequences in more complex terrain. Large drifts, recent cornice growth, stiff, hollow-feeling snow, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Conduct your own localized assessments and be suspicious of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

As we enter a period of quiet weather, avalanche concerns have become more isolated in nature. However, there are several other considerations for the backcountry enthusiast. A variety of surface crusts have been reported throughout the forecast area, making for variable and challenging travel conditions. Equipment like ski and/or boot crampons and an ice ax may be necessary, depending on where you wish to travel. Periods of high pressure are also a good time to start thinking about how our current snowpack and surfaces will respond to the next snowfall. Recent field observations have reported substantial surface faceting in many areas. While this process can be beneficial in the short term by breaking down surface crusts and leading to recycled powder, it may also make for consequential weak layers in the future.
