Highlights

Avalanche danger remains low and avalanches are unlikely. Normal caution is advised when traveling in the mountains. Look out for falling rock and ice and firm and icy surface conditions high on Mount Shasta.

Avalanche Discussion

The last snowfall in the Mount Shasta zone was on January 7th. Since then we've had warm temperatures, lots of sunshine, and some wind. Recorded wind speeds were strong to gale force over the past couple of days, and isolated blowing snow was observed. There's generally not enough soft snow available for wind slab development, especially on southerly aspects that have been going through a melt freeze cycle. Moderate to strong E-ENE-NE wind is forecasted to continue today and will keep the snow surface firm and travel above treeline difficult.
