Highlights

Not much data has been obtained from above treeline regions. Continue to evaluate steep leeward terrain carefully if climbing high. At lower elevations, you may find unstable snow in isolated areas or in extreme terrain, but generally safe avalanche conditions exist. Stay clear of cornices. Castle Lake Road is scheduled to open today.

    It still felt wintry out there yesterday - cold temperatures and new snow and blowing snow. There is plenty of existing low density snow available for transport. We have not obtained much data from above treeline regions. Some uncertainty exists there. Evaluate wind loaded areas carefully as you transition from below to above treeline. Pay particular attention in extreme terrain or on unsupported slopes. Stay clear of cornices.

    A widespread ice lens has capped off a lot of lower elevation snow. This has reduced concern at near and below treeline regions, but continue to look for unstable snow in isolated terrain.

    Test for wind slabs by stomping on wind drifts and roll-overs in safe terrain. If you see blocking or shooting cracks, then wind slabs may be present in terrain near you.

Avalanche Discussion

Two snow blowers were hard at work yesterday on Castle Lake Road. Drivers indicated that they'd probably finish up today. The county reported that when they are, they'll open the gates. They expect this to happen by this afternoon. We'll keep you posted on social media when we know that it is open.

Temperatures will remain well below freezing, so if you head out, don't skimp on those extra layers, beanies and gloves.
