You can trigger a shallow wind slab near and above the treeline where winds and fresh snow have loaded atypical slopes. Approach ridgelines with caution, testing for punchy snow above a crust. Wind-sheltered terrain may harbor a shallow loose dry avalanche problem. If you find six inches or more of snow above a crust steer around steep, convex slopes and wind-loaded pillows.

Light to moderate E winds will build shallow wind slabs with low-density snow that fell earlier in the week. Slabs may form on atypical aspects Saturday night near and above treeline. Several inches of less wind-affected snow may fall Sunday, obscuring these shallow slabs. Use your pole, probe, or boot as you travel to check the depth of new snow above the crust and for any layering within the new snow. If you don't find any layering, then you have a Dry Loose problem to manage. In this case, avoid steep slopes approaching 40 degrees where a slide could carry you into rocks or over a cliff. If you find poor bonding or heavier layers over lower density layers, you have a shallow slab problem. Manage this by avoiding steep or unsupported slopes steeper than 35 degrees.
The most eastern slopes and lower elevation slopes still lack significant snow cover and early season travel conditions are still the biggest hazard in many areas.
