Weak snow is buried 1.5-2.5 feet deep in this zone. This layer of sugary snow (facets) developed during the prolonged drought at the end of November and the beginning of December. A series of storms has gradually loaded this snow, creating numerous natural avalanches with each major loading event. With good visibility yesterday, I saw several large natural avalanches that had failed in this zone during the most recent storm on Saturday (photo at right).
In addition to these natural avalanches, skiers have triggered 3 avalanches involving this snow in the Galena Summit area in the past two days. In the Sawtooths and Western Smokys, this layer continues to produce impressive natural avalanches, even with minor loading events. I have little doubt that triggering an avalanche on this weak snow is likely today.
Your best bet for managing this problem is to avoid steep slopes, particularly those with recent and past wind loading. As a bonus for your caution, skiing and riding conditions are great in this low angle terrain right now, but don't forget about what is above you! Given the nature of our snowpack, remotely triggering an avalanche from below, above, and to the sides of steeper slopes is a possibility. Be aware of the terrain you are in and the terrain you are exposed to from above.
ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION - LOOSE SNOWSaturday's storm graced us with nearly a foot of low-density snow in this zone. Light winds since this storm have left this snow in place for the most part. With temperatures a few degrees warmer than yesterday we may see some small loose snow avalanches as the sun heats up slopes. This type of problem can be especially hazardous in the steep, rocky terrain of the Sawtooths. In addition, if the wind picks up a bit (as forecast) we may see some small wind slabs forming near ridgetops. Though small in size, these may be touchy and will be adding stress to the weak snow described above.
(12/27/2020) Large natural avalanches are visible on McDonald Peak (foreground) and Parks Peak (background). These slides broke hundreds of feet wide, failing at the end of the storm on Saturday.
