Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Tuesday. Up to 15 cm of snow will fall. The snowpack is unfavourably layered. As a consequence of a gusty southerly wind, soft wind slabs formed. These are lying on surface hoar in particular on wind-protected shady slopes. In the course of the day the wind slabs will increase in size once again. The snowpack will become increasingly prone to triggering. Distinct weak layers exist in the old snowpack. This applies in particular on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 1800 m.

Tendency

The avalanche conditions remain unfavourable. The new snow of Thursday will be deposited on a weakly bonded old snowpack. The snowpack will become increasingly prone to triggering.

Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and wind an unfavourable avalanche situation will prevail.

Weak layers in the upper part of the snowpack can be released easily by individual winter sport participants in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. This applies in particular on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 1600 m. Avalanches can release deeper layers of the snowpack and reach medium size in particular along the border with Friuli. Individual natural avalanches are possible. The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase with altitude. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack indicate the danger. Remotely triggered avalanches are possible in isolated cases.
