Wind slabs represent the main danger. The wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence above approximately 2000 m. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate defensive route selection.
The wind slabs are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in the high Alpine regions. Wind slabs are easy to recognise. Avalanche prone weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on shady slopes.
