Avalanche Summary

A natural avalanche was reported in Simpson’s on Friday. Check out this Mountain Information Network report for more details.

Observations are limited this time of year. Thanks to everyone who has submitted a MIN, keep up the good work.

Snowpack Summary

Last weeks wind event has resulted in a highly wind affected snow surface in the alpine. Wind slabs may still be found on northerly terrain, while south facing slopes may be scoured down to the early November rain crust.

On sheltered features a new surface hoar layer is just below the surface. The early November crust is buried 30 to 60 cm deep and may have small facets above it in these locations.

At treeline there is a snowpack depth of 60 to 100 cm. Snowpack depth tapers with elevation to around 30 cm at valley bottoms. Many early season hazards are just below the surface below treeline.

Weather Summary

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy with trace amounts of snow. 5 to 15 km/h south alpine wind. Treeline temperature -6°C, potential for temperature inversion with colder temps at valley bottoms.

Thursday

Mix of sun and cloud. 5 to 15 km/h east alpine wind. Treeline temperature -6°C.

Friday

Mix of sun and cloud. 10 to 30 km/h southeast alpine wind. Treeline temperature -8°C.

Saturday

Mostly cloudy with 1 to 3 cm of snow possible. 15 to 30 km/h south alpine wind. Treeline temperature -6°C.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be careful as you transition into wind-affected terrain.
  • Seek out sheltered terrain where new snow hasn't been affected by wind.
  • Be cautious of buried obstacles, especially below treeline.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
