Snowpack Summary

Approximately 5 cm of snow has been received since Thursday night in the coastal forecast area. This snow and the other that was still available were transported by the extreme west wind. This may have resulted in the formation of new wind slabs, especially on NE-E-SE bare slopes and forest openings. These harder snow pillows may be underlain by less dense snow or older wind slabs. The height of snow on the ground varies between 100 to 120 cm.

Weather Summary

Synopsis: The combination of an arctic air mass, a low pressure system and extreme westerly winds will cause blowing snow until Saturday night. Precipitation and wind will diminish Sunday morning.

Evening and overnight: Blowing snow and 2 to 5 cm of snow, wind west 60 to 100 km/h. Low -30.

Saturday: Blowing snow and 2 to 4 cm of snow. Wind west 60 to 100km/h. High -24.

Sunday: Cloudy with a chance of intermittent snow in the afternoon. Wind southwest 15 to 40 km/h. High -15.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
