Even small avalanches can have serious consequences in extreme cold.
Carefully assess or avoid steep, wind-loaded slopes.
A size 2 wind slab avalanche was observed on a south aspect near Tutshi Lake on Monday. No other recent avalanches have been reported.
With limited observations this time of year, keep checking conditions and adjusting your plans. Extra caution is advised during the extreme cold.
The upper snowpack is heavily wind affected, with widespread sastrugi and hard wind slabs in open terrain. Only isolated sheltered areas still hold soft snow.
Cold temperatures are faceting the mid and lower snowpack, allowing wind slabs to persist longer than usual.
Snowpack depths vary widely due to wind, but average around 100 cm across the region.
