Avalanche Summary

Recently, only small dry loose avalanches have been reported.

There was a report of a size 2 slab avalanche off of Fraser Peak on Saturday. See this MIN post for more details.

If you head into the backcountry please consider submitting your observations to the Mountain Information Network.

Snowpack Summary

Check out this great MIN from Monday.

Southerly winds will likely redistribute new snow today.

5 to 10 cm of previous soft snow can be found in sheltered locations. At lower elevations, this could rest on a layer of small facets over a crust.

South-facing terrain is generally scoured.

The mid and lower snowpack is reported to be well settled, with a thick, well-bonded crust approximately 30 to 50 cm above the ground at elevations below 1200 m.

Snow depth ranges from 80 to 200 cm across the region.

Weather Summary

Wednesday Night

Cloudy with 5 to 10 cm of new snow expected, south alpine winds 20 to 40 km/h, treeline temperature -12°C.

Thursday

Cloudy with 5 to 10 cm of new snow expected, southwest alpine winds 40 to 60 km/h, treeline temperature -6°C.

Friday

Partly cloudy with trace amounts of new snow expected, southwest alpine winds 10 to 20 km/h, treeline temperature -10°C.

Saturday

Partly cloudy with trace amounts of new snow possible, northwest alpine winds 10 km/h, treeline temperature -15°C.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be careful to keep storm day fever from luring you out into bigger terrain features.
  • Seek out sheltered terrain where new snow hasn't been wind-affected.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
