Regions

Lizard-Flathead, Akamina, Flathead, Lizard, Moyie, Crowsnest South.

Don't let blue skies and fresh powder lure you into consequential terrain

New snow & wind is set to build reactive storm slabs

Seek out good riding in sheltered terrain with no wind effect

Confidence

Moderate

  • Forecast snowfall amounts are uncertain.

Avalanche Summary

Thursday, natural and explosive triggered slabs up to size 2 were observed in the Lizard Range.

Wednesday, explosive control triggered small storm slabs in the Lizard Range and small wind slabs near Castle Mtn.

Tuesday, natural and explosive triggered slabs up to size 1.5 were observed in the Lizard Range on wind-loaded alpine slopes.

Snowpack Summary

5 - 15 cm of new snow is expected, falling primarily overnight Saturday. This will add to the 25 - 50 cm of storm snow accumulated in the region over the last few days, building widespread storm slabs.

The storm snow overlies a recent rain crust that reaches up to 1700 - 2000 m.

Otherwise, the snowpack is generally well settled. Some additional crusts are buried between 50 to 100 cm, but are not concerning at this time.

Below 1500 m, the snowpack rapidly diminishes with elevation.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Continue to make conservative terrain choices while the storm snow settles and stabilizes.
  • Closely monitor how the new snow is bonding to the crust.
  • Avoid freshly wind-loaded terrain features.
  • Seek out sheltered terrain where new snow hasn't been affected by wind.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
