Recent storm snow has fallen on a variety of surfaces and will continue through the day on Monday. Keep an eye on local snowfall amounts as they will vary widely between the divide and front ranges

Weather Forecast

Continued snowfall through the day on Monday especially along the eastern slopes with accumulations in the realm of 10-20cm bringing storm totals to 30-35cm.

Snowpack Summary

10-15cm new snow sits on a variety of wind affected surfaces including previous windslab, suncrusts and the February 1 melt freeze crust, which exists up to approx 2100m. The midpack is strong, though weaker basal facets can be found in thin areas.

Avalanche Summary

Neighbouring operations reported skier triggered avalanches to size 1 in the new storm snow yesterday.

Confidence

Forecast snowfall amounts are uncertain on Monday

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
