You can trigger a small avalanche in wind-drifted snow on slopes steeper than about 35 degrees, especially on east to south-facing slopes above treeline. If you hear a hollow sound or see cracks around your feet, you're likely on a wind-loaded slope and should avoid traveling across steep terrain. Even small avalanches can knock you over, and drag you over dangerous terrain traps like a cliff.
