Avalanche Summary

Most slopes are safe from avalanches. The few slopes where you can trigger a small, relatively harmless avalanche are where you find hard, wind-drifted snow on north and northeast-facing slopes above treeline. Cracking in the snow around your feet is an obvious sign you found a wind-drift. Although any avalanche you trigger will be small, it can knock you over and drag you off a cliff, so be aware of dangerous terrain beneath you if you find these wind-drifted areas.
