Avalanche Summary

You can trigger avalanches on steep slopes with wind-drifted snow. Look for rounded pillows and feel for stiff, hollow layers. You are most likely to find drifted snow near ridgelines or along gullies in the alpine. Pay attention to drifting into unusual locations from strong winds. Slopes sheltered from the wind offer safer and better riding.

Below the treeline, pay attention to steep slopes if you find a cohesionless snowpack above terrain traps.
