You can trigger small avalanches in smooth, pillowy drifts of snow. If you are traveling in the alpine, go around firm snow drifts that may crack or collapse beneath you. You are likely to find these below ridges and in gullies. Although these avalanches will be relatively small, they can knock you off your feet and push you over thinly covered rocks and downed trees. You can travel more safely on soft, unconsolidated snow.
