Highlights

Large persistent slabs will slowly gain strength but could still be human triggered on a variety of aspects, especially by larger triggers such as snow machines. These slabs are expected to remain unstable on some slopes for days or weeks. Although these dangerous slabs could be triggered in the early morning hours, they will be more sensitive to failure during the warmer portion of the day. Expert knowledge and patience are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain today.

    Large persistent slabs could be human triggered on a variety of aspects. At the mid and upper elevations these slabs could have crown depths of two to five feet. At the lower elevations these slabs could have crown depths of one to three feet. They have been triggered by skiers and riders in areas where thick deposits of wind-drifted snow exist in avalanche starting zones. Shallow, weak spots in these slabs on steep rocky slopes should also be considered likely trigger points. Previous tracks on a slope should not be mistaken as an indication of stability. These slabs will become more sensitive to human triggers during the warmer portion of the day. Persistent slabs warrant a patient approach to safely navigate potentially suspect terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

A cool, dry and stable northerly flow will be over the region. Skies will be clear overnight and on Tuesday. Temperatures will remain inverted with overnight lows in the teens at elevation and near zero in the valleys once again. Daytime highs will rise into the 20s and 30s and winds will be westerly at 20 to 25 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE below an elevation of 7,500 feet and CONSIDERABLE at the mid and upper elevations. The snow structure remains poor and large slab avalanches up to five feet in depth could still be triggered by humans on a variety of aspects.
