Highlights

Spring diurnal conditions exist, and the avalanche hazard is generally low. Small, wet loose instabilities may develop in the afternoon, particularly at mid and lower elevations. Expect firm surfaces in the morning and at upper elevations, and progressive softening during the day.

     It may be possible for a rider to trigger a small, wet loose avalanche today. You're most likely to find this problem on steep slopes in the sun, particularly at middle elevations. Recent natural avalanches are a sure sign that the slope you're on could produce another slide. Deep, unsupportable wet snow and rollerballs that accumulate snow as they roll downhill are also signs that slopes may be unstable. Plan to be off of steep, solar slopes by early afternoon, and monitor surface warming on all aspects throughout your tour.

Avalanche Discussion

A moderate overnight freeze and breezy southwest winds will keep avalanche conditions generally safe and predictable today. Expect firm surfaces to soften progressively throughout the day as the sun works its way around the compass. On solar slopes, particularly at middle elevations, a rider may be able to initiate small wet loose instabilities during the warmest part of the day. Consider that the consequences of a small avalanche may be exacerbated in exposed or technical terrain. Good spring protocol involves being off of steep solar slopes by early afternoon.

Otherwise, access and snowlines are rising daily. High trailhead options and approach shoes may be prudent in the days to come. Snow surfaces are variable, but generally firm for at least part of the day. Ski/boot crampons and an ice axe may be warranted if you plan to explore steep terrain today.
