Highlights

Above freezing temperatures will warm the snowpack today creating wet surface snow on solar aspects.  Be on the lookout for changing conditions and adjust your plan accordingly. Triggering an avalanche today is unlikely, normal caution is advised.

    Wet loose snow can become a problem when the surface of the snow warms too rapidly.  The snow surface lately has been a mix of hard windboard or dense heavy powder. As the dense snow warms it could show signs of instability today. On steeper slopes or convexities this snow could gain momentum and start to entrain more snow. The problem is most likely isolated to certain terrain features such as a steep wall of a gully, or a rocky south-facing slope.

Avalanche Discussion

Signs of a warming snowpack was observed yesterday in the Crater Crest area in and below the treeline. Pinwheels and roller balls were observed indicating some surface instability within the snowpack in and below the treeline. Outside of wet loose snow, the forecast team recently removed wind slab from the problem list. On a regional scale, the wind slab problem has become unreactive and difficult to trigger. In isolated pockets of complex or extreme terrain, the possibility of triggering a slab remains a concern. A low danger rating does not mean no danger, monitor the snow in and around you for changes in conditions and adjust your plan accordingly.
