Highlights

Expect increasing avalanche danger as new snow accumulates throughout the day Sunday. By late afternoon, triggering a large avalanche in new snow may be possible on unsupported slopes 35 degrees and steeper. Pay attention to changing conditions and carefully assess how new snow bonds to the old snow surface.

    By the time 6in of new snow accumulates, you may be able to trigger fresh slabs on slopes greater than 35 degrees. Give the new snow time to settle and stabilize. It may not bond well to variable old snow surfaces. New snow may be cohesionless at times, and triggering small loose snow avalanches or sluffs may be possible in steep and unsupported terrain. With strong southerly winds ahead of the incoming snowfall, you may be able to find fresh deposits of wind-blown snow in leeward terrain at upper elevations. Be especially careful near ridge crests, gullies, and unsupported slopes. If we hit the upper end of the precipitation forecast, dangerous avalanche conditions could even develop late in the afternoon. Gather information as you travel and be prepared to adjust your plans. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully and look for red flags like shooting cracks, collapses, and recent avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

An incoming storm will bring windy conditions overnight Saturday before tapering off as snowfall begins early Sunday and continues through the day. You may encounter low danger in the morning, but watch for conditions to change quickly as new snow accumulates. Observers in the Mt. Baker area reported minor loose snow avalanches the past few days, but generally good snowpack stability. Surface hoar was also found throughout the zone on Saturday. It remains to be seen how well preserved it is when the snow starts falling on Sunday. The early season snowpack that was looking healthy for November has shrunk down in early December and melted quite a bit, so early-season hazards should be expected. Keep an eye out for open creeks, talus fields, buried logs, and small trees.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
