Highlights

The avalanche danger will quickly rise to CONSIDERABLE as the strong sunshine and very warm temperatures once again heat the snowpack today. Wet avalanches may be both natural and human-triggered and occur on steep east, south, and west aspects, as well as for northerly aspects, especially at the low and mid-elevations.

    Wet Snow can be very predictable and unpredictable at the same time. Let me explain: I can say with a straight face and predict that the sun will rise and warm the snow surface, starting the melting process once again and probably create more wet avalanches as the day wears on. I cannot, however, predict the extent or the timing of this avalanche activity. I just know, that if the slope is wet and unconsolidated, we don't want to be on or underneath it. The Wet Snow Avalanche Problem covers two types of avalanches:

    Wet Loose Avalanches - These typically occur within layers of wet snow near the surface caused by warming temperatures and strong sunshine. As the snow becomes wet, the upper surface layers become unconsolidated as the bonds between the snow grains lose their cohesion. They start at a point and typically fan out as they move downhill. These avalanches can entrain a lot of snow, especially in a tight rock-lined chute or in sustained steep terrain. The first sign of wet loose avalanches is usually rollerballs or pinwheels. Today, these avalanches can happen naturally or be human-triggered.

    Wet Slab Avalanches - This is a tough one; we haven't seen any wet slab avalanche activity in the backcountry up to this point. However, on our second night with temperatures above freezing, I wouldn't be surprised to hear some wet slab avalanche activity today or tomorrow. Basically, the way this works is your slab (stronger snow) fails on wet saturated snow grains below in the snowpack somewhere. Meltwater can also saturate a layer of snow, and that becomes the weak layer releasing the slab of stronger snow above. Unfortunately, we/I really don't have a good grasp on forecasting this avalanche problem. Therefore I've attached a paper on this topic HERE.

    Glide avalanches happen when the entire snowpack starts moving downhill on top of some smooth surface like a rock slab, and then at some point, the snow releases and produces an avalanche.

    Glide avalanches only happen in a few specific places like Broads Fork, Mill B South, and Stairs Gulch, where large rock slabs exist under the snowpack. Several glide avalanches happened in Broads Fork on March 2nd and March 5th. Two people died in a glide avalanche in 2001 on April 28th in Stairs Gulch. Avoiding these areas during this intense warming would be wise.

Recent Activity

We had one report of a natural avalanche out of Little Pine Chute in upper Little Cottonwood Canyon (LCC) that was large enough to catch, carry and bury a human. Another natural wet loose avalanche occurred on a north-facing path just west of Perla's in LCC.

Snow and Weather

It was another clear and warm night for the mountains, with temperatures overnight bottoming out in the low 40's °F across the upper elevation terrain. Winds did increase slightly overnight and now blow from the southwest at speeds of 10-15 mph with some gusts into the 20's at 10,000'. Current mountain temperatures are in the low 40's °F, with only a few weather stations reading temperatures in the mid 30's °F. We have another sunny and warm day on schedule for the mountains, with temperatures once again climbing into the upper 50's and low 60's °F at 9,000 feet.

Yesterday the SLC International Airport weather station recorded a high temperature of 78 °F at 3:00 pm, falling a few degrees short of breaking the record high. Alta Guard (8,800') topped out with a high of 59 °F, and today will likely be about the same as temperatures start climbing at sunrise.

We do have some hope starting Monday as a trough enters Northern Utah bringing back normal temperatures and the possibility of some snow at the higher elevations. Since we are on the snow topic, I had to look way out into the future, and beginning on the 12th, a more active pattern sets up for my birthday week with the hope of some more powder riding.
