At high altitudes, the old snow surface is usually hard and icy. Under the hard layer, the accumulating transformation weakens the snowpack foundation. The tnew snow (up to 20 cm) is deposited on a hard snow layer or, on the north side, on a soft layer, depending on the exposure and altitude. The bonding of the fresh snow or drifting snow layer will not be sufficient. In general, the snow cover is very unevenly distributed, with little snow from the middle elevations downwards.

Beware of fresh drift snow at high altitudes.

The avalanche danger is rated as moderate above the tree line. Attention must be paid to the drift snow and old snow problem. The danger spots are in the north and east sectors. It cannot be completely ruled out that a snow slab can be triggered with a small additional load. In places, avalanches can tear through an persistent weak layers

On Tuesday, an Italian low will bring very cloudy and wet weather to the Styrian mountains. Snowfall will start early in the morning in the Totes Gebirge and spread towards the peripheral mountains as the day progresses. The snow line in the north will often drop into the valleys, in the south it will only start to snow above 1500m, in the afternoon it may snow down to around 700m. The wind will shift to the west to northwest and it will no longer be so stormy with gusts of between 30 and 50 km/h. At 2000m it will cool down to minus 7 degrees in the north and minus 4 degrees in the south.

On Wednesday, the high-altitude current will turn back to the west. This means that the clouds in Styria will clear again during the course of the day and make way for sunshine. Rain and snowfall have already subsided during the night and Wednesday will be dry. The avalanche danger remains the same.
