Snowpack

The new fallen snow from the last period of precipitation from Wednesday to Friday was partially deposited on a dry and loose old snow surface, especially in the high Alpine regions on steep northern slopes. Here, dry slab avalanches are most likely to be triggered at the point of transition to the old snowpack. The instabilities within the layers of new and drifted snow have largely stabilised.

The old snowpack is water-saturated on southern slopes up to the high Alpine regions and on eastern and western slopes up to around 3000 m. On northern slopes, most of the old snowpack is water-saturated up to between 2600 and 2800 m. Particularly in the inneralpine regions of Grisons, fractures in the old snowpack are still possible at this altitude when weak layers initially become moist. During the overcast night into Sunday, hardly any strong crust will form. As temperatures rise in the daytime, wet and gliding avalanches will be possible as early as the late morning.

The night into Sunday will be mostly cloudy. During the day, it will be mostly very cloudy on the Main Alpine Ridge and south of it with a little precipitation falling in showers, and as snow above 2300 m. North of the Main Alpine Ridge, it will be quite sunny in the late morning and increasingly cloudy in the afternoon with showers and thunderstorms, especially on the northern flank of the Alps.

Outlook

In the north, the nights into Monday and Tuesday will be clear. It will be mostly sunny in the late morning. In the afternoon, it will be increasingly cloudy with cumulus clouds and showers and thunderstorms will be possible.

In the south, the night into Monday will still be mostly very cloudy, while the night into Tuesday will be clear. During the day it will be fairly sunny on Monday and mainly sunny on Tuesday. The zero-degree level will rise towards 3000 m. The wind will be light.

The risk of dry avalanches will decrease. The danger of wet and gliding avalanches will change in the course of the day. Touring skiing should be completed in good time.
