Good from far... The light precipitations of the last few days may make some places look attractive from afar, but the reality is different when you get closer.

The good news is that temperatures will remain cold, bring on some precipitations!

Snowpack Summary

The surface is very variable on the lee aspects (NE to S), going from a 5 to 10 cm layer of low density snow (more in the alpine), to wind affected snow, depending on the location. This is all on a firm, icy crust that generally supports the weight of a skier. The windward aspects (N to SE) are generally scoured down to this crust in areas that are not protected by trees. Travelling in the alpine is possible, but not recommended without crampons, ice axes and the knowledge to use them. There are areas of accumulation alternating with many exposed rocks and small trees not yet buried, which could worsen the consequences of a slide.

The best skiing is probably found below tree line, where the 5-10cm layer of powdery snow on top of this crust is preserved and improves the quality of skiing.

The average height of the snowpack is still very thin, and extremely variable from one place to another.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Carefully evaluate steep lines for wind slabs.
  • Early season avalanches at any elevation have the potential to be particularly dangerous due to obstacles that are exposed or just below the surface.
